DHL Global Forwarding, part of Deutsche Post DHL, has announced it is to increase its rail operations in Germany as it aims to cut down on carbon emissions. This decision was made involving the transport of freight containers being taken to the loading terminals of Bremerhaven and Hamburg shipping firms. Prior to this, road transport had been used to take these consolidated containers to the company’s Bremen facility. According to DHL’s air and sea freight unit, it is expected that carbon emissions will be reduced by around 365 tonnes per year. Vice president of strategy and business at DHL Global Forwarding Germany, Dr Jürgen Klenner, said: "As much as 50% of a product’s carbon footprint is generated in the course of transportation. Together with the shipping companies, we will continue to develop environmentally friendly solutions for logistics processes in the future.” This project had been on trial now for a year, with the decision resulting from a demonstration of high efficiency in regular operations. Under the GoGreen initiative, Deutsche Post DHL is looking to reduce 30 per cent of emissions by the year 2020 and this move ensures that the international courier is now well on the way to achieving this goal.
